Culturally speaking: Are marching bands at HBCU's better than those at regular colleges? Alot of people say the best part of football games at HBCU's are the marching bands.
Do you prefer black college marching bands to regular college marching bands? | | I go to football games to watch football because I'm a fan of football. When halftime comes I take that time to use the restroom and reload on beer, popcorn, hotdogs, peanuts or other drinks and snacks. If I want to see band competitions I'll go to a battle of the bands. | Has anyone ever been to the Honda Battle of the Bands in Georgia?? I'm a sophmore in highschool and I play in the marching band and I absolutely LOOOVE it!!! I especially love watching historically black college bands performing. My friend told me about this event called battle of the bands held at the Georgia Dome....how is the show? Is it worth going to? How much are tickets? | Yes I have. It's really good. I enjoyed watching the bands from the HBCU's compete, if FAMU is there, they are always on point because they have so many people in the band. The formations that they do are amazing.
It's worth it, and there are always celebrities there performing as an added treat. It's one of the better family venues here in Atlanta. The tickets are fairly cheap, I think the prices vary. The Honda Battle is in January, so with this being July you still have a long way to go. | Is TBS a black channel? I don't watch a lot of TV, but I'm watching a movie called "Drum Line". It's about a college marching band that just happens to be set at a black college. Most of the commercials during this movie seem to be directed toward other shows featuring blacks or toward black consumers. Is TBS a black channel or do they just show predominantly black commercials during a predominantly black movie? Are non-blacks allowed to watch?
(Heads-up - If you take this question way too seriously, go take your meds.) | | The movie has a lot of Black charcters in it. Therefore it is believed to be aimed a Black People. So they show comercial with Black people because they beleive that is what Black people want to see. | Do most Black Americans prefer going to Historically Black Colleges? for the post-secondary institutions, than conventional colleges. I think they are pretty cool, because they are riddled with Black culture; everything from:
-Stepping Teams
-History taught from an alternative perpective
-A & T marching bands
-Black Professors *gasp*
-Driven Black students
and, contrary to popular opinion:
1) They are NOT exclusive to Blacks, hence the HISTORICALLY part of HBCU's
2) Morons can't get in, and a lot of them are on the Ivy League circuit, which means they rank among the top insitutions of learning in the world | i went to HBCU Lane College and proud of it. I had a very good time there. My son went to UAPB. I am proud to say and receive a a good education and join my frat. I notice a lot of young Black don't feel good about their own they prefer to around other and that is ok just as long as you get a education is what count.
You are missing the experience of a black campus nothing can be compared with it. | Question about Kanye West -? On the radio the other day the DJ's were talking about Kanye West performing the song When Jesus Walks with a Hisorically Black College/University marching band and I was wondering if anyone knew which one so I could try to get a copy of the song - Thanks | | yes try www.limewire.com. or if you email me i can try to download it and send it to you. | What would be the best college or university for me? I'm a junior in high school right now and I'm planning out what colleges I'd like to apply to next year so I'll have everything ready and be prepared. I want to become a general surgeon or nurse practitioner right now (I may change my mind in the future but that's really what I want to do right now.) I do know that I want to be in the health/medical field working in a hospital. I wouldn't mind going to a historically black college or university (but your suggestion doesn't have to be one) and I'm going to continue doing marching band so the school has to have a really good marching band. I'd like for the school to have a sorority-particularly Delta Sigma Theta. If not Delta Sigma Theta, I'd really like for them to have sororities to choose from. I don't want to stray too far from home. I live in Charleston, SC and I want to stay in the southern area. So anywhere such as Georgia, North Carolina, or Florida. I'm aiming to get some scholarships and grants so the financial part will be taken care of, so the tuition and fees wouldn't really matter I suppose. What college do you think would be best for me to attend?
*Serious responses only, please and thank you | | Here's an idea. Make an appointment over at MUSC (www.musc.edu/em/admissions). See the tab "future applicants", that may be you some day. Be honest with them. Tell them you're in high school and are interested in medicine and would like to talk with someone about medical careers. Tell them what you're tellin' me and they might give you some insight. As far as colleges, honestly, there are twenty within the area you mentioned that are good schools academically. You need one that fits you as a person. Another idea, talk with your family doctor or a doctor that you or someone in your family knows. Doctors love to help people who want to go into the field of medicine. Good luck, keep hittin' those school books. | Having a hard decision about crossing in a Marching Band.? Next year i will be a sophomore in college and im going to join my university's marching band. I go to a Historically Black University, and the marching band is a known band. There is one problem.there is a BIG HAZING issue. You either have a option to cross or dont cross. When u cross yo have to do all types of crazy ish to earn respect and also get hazed and get beat with a paddle. I do not want to go through that. Its not worth it becuase anything could happen with this and also when i apply for a job they wont care that i was in So&So section. On the other hand if you dont cross they will pick on you and talk about you.I do not want to cross. I keep tellin myself im there to get my education not there for them so they can talk about me and say all types of things. But i want my respect but i dont want to cross. Also when u cross you get cool boots but not eveyone in the band has cross. I just do not want to go through with all that getting beat its not worth it.What is a good option? | Haha... I attended an HBCU for 2 years. Marched with them for both of those years. I pledged my section. Yes, I was hazed. BRUTALLY hazed. You have some balls for asking this question online.... and I have a lot for just answering it! ;-)
I initially didn't want to go through the process, but I did. If you didn't pledge your section, then they totally shunned you. Everyone taunted you. Your band experience would not be very pleasant if you chose not to participate in the abuse. But I looked at it like a challenge. I was considered the weakest link in my section and probably in the band. At first glance I was fragile and intolerant. I wanted to prove them all wrong, so I pledged my section and I crossed. It was pure hell. Yes, I got the paddle COUNTLESS times. I shed many tears.
Was it worth it? No. I have moved on with my life (military) and I don't keep up with them anymore. After I crossed, I was still bitter about a lot and I couldn't bond with them the way that I was "supposed" to (I was bitter because personal reasons. . . . long story). Some other things happened... a lot of drama and conflict arose. They weren't my "brothers" and "sisters" like they were "supposed" to become. But it was a very memorable experience. I had some good times with them while it lasted. Do I regret it? Nope! I look back on some situations and I laugh at them. I'm stronger and the pain from back then doesn't pain me anymore. Plus, the experience showed me that I had an inner strength and endurance that was previously unfelt. It was hard going through it, but at the end I was so proud of myself. . .
I won't tell you what to do. I don't condone hazing and abuse. But trust me when I say that IF you decide to go through with it and you cross, you will laugh at most of the happenings. Beautiful bonds are created with your line brothers/sisters. But again, I DON'T condone hazing and abuse. I'd NEVER tell someone that they should go through that.
I don't regret my experience though. I wouldn't re-do it.
If you really don't want to do it, don't. And don't do it for the boots, lol. I had to personalize my reason to pledge to make me feel like doing it. . . . . . . . . . | What college would accept me at this point in time? I am a 14 year old guy in high school, and i just finished my 1st semester of my freshman year. My grades were like a C average, and i failed math, and if i manage to change that this next semester, would i still have a high chance of getting into a good college? I am in Boy Scouts (almost have my eagle), I am a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, and did Marching Band earlier this season, so i should have plenty of activities to put on my application. The only problem is, which colleges would accept me (assuming i pulled myself together next semester)? If there are any that might accept me, I appreciate any reccomendations. And if all possible, somewhere close to California | You are only in freshman year, so don't worry about too much.
The colleges mostly look your grade junior year, so you have time.
Also, if you prefer, there's always community colleges you can go to. | What College is Right for Me? I'm a rising senior (class of 2012), and I'll be filling out my college applications in October/November. My top choices (in no particular order) are Emory, Vanderbilt, Dartmouth, George Washington, Georgetown, Northwestern, Columbia, and Harvard (my SUPER "REACH" school).

I'm fluent in German (i don't know if that's beneficial...it's just something different), have played the viola for 9 years, and I also worked a full-time job over the summer at Six Flags.
Oh, and I'm also a Black female who is a second-generation college-goer. I also want to become a lawyer (I don't know if that would help me or not).
Based on this information, which of my possible colleges would I be most likely to get into? And if you believe that there is another college that I didn't mention, PLEASE tell me about it; I want to compile the best possible list of colleges to apply to. Thanks! | You should go to cappex.com
It helped me getting into college, and getting scholarships. |
