As you probably know, cats are very independent, stubborn creatures. However, they certainly CAN be trained -- more so than most people think -- if you treat them accordingly.

You're on the right track, or so it sounds. How long have you had the cat? If it's been less than a month, he may still be adjusting. Excessive meowing is usually a cat's way of expressing that he wants something -- usually attention. He's likely still looking for his prior owner.

I guess you could say I'm an "amateur cat trainer", because I have two cats who are trained rather like dogs -- they come when called, play fetch, bring me toys on command, lie down when ordered, go to their room when commanded, etc. I'm no expert, but I firmly believe cats can be trained if you just form a strong bond of trust and go about it the right way.

Cats train best through positive reinforcement. Because of their independent natures, if they don't have a strong bond with you, they won't obey you. For instance, my cats won't obey even the simplest commands when given by a stranger, even for a treat. In addition, they tend to ignore you if they've been recently scolded, unless the scolding was done in the right way ("No!" then diversion or ignored).

Which of you has the strongest bond with the cat? That one should probably do the training. You must never yell at the cat, but instead when the cat is misbehaving tell him No! and if he's scratching, move him to his pole. If he's meowing tell him No! then distract him with something else -- a toy, preferably, that he enjoys. I've found success teaching my cat to be silent, by placing her in "timeout" (the bathroom, with the light on and door closed) until she quiets, then letting her out and giving her positive reinforcement (petting and attention). This worked fairly quickly, though it was nervewracking the first few times.

If your cat is lonely, a radio playing softly in another room might help. Oh, and a carpet runner might help -- we did this with one cat that just refused to use the pole no matter what -- it's a carpet runner that's a thin rough scratchy black indoor/outdoor carpet piece, we got for $5 from walmart and laid on the floor in an area he liked to scratch, then gradually moved to an out-of-the-way area. He loved the texture of it so much that it's his only scratching place now. Might help :)

My dog is attached to his food bowl?
My 2 year old Shih-tzu male is attached to his food bowl. I never bother him when he is eating, but when he finishes, I like to take his plate up and wash it. When I reach for it, he growls and shows all of his teeth and there is nothing left in his plate. I have to get the broom and rake the plate to me and while I am doing this he is barking and constantly biting at the broom. We go through this everyday, every week, every month. How can I break him from being attached to his bowl. I even tried changing bowls but it did not help. And he won't take spankings. The problem is that your dog thinks that he is the alpha dog(he is the boss). With his condition being as serious as to draw blood when he doesn't get his way, he HAS to be put into his place before he harms you or someone else again. First of all, put a muzzle on him for your safety while training him. The only way to train a dog that will actually bite you is to be extremely assertive with him, he needs to know that you will not back down and will not allow him to be the alpha anymore. With his muzzle on(and leash), place the food bowl down and make him sit by it. As soon as he growls, you need to grab him by the scruff of the neck, flip him onto his back and pin him there until he submits(relaxes without moving). He is going to raise hell, but just remember that you are not hurting him and NOT to give in. If he is extremely aggressive, this may take ten minutes or more. This sounds violent, but it is exactly how dogs tell eachother (in thier own language) that they are the boss, and the only language that he will understand. If you don't feel comfortable with this, you need to take him to a professional trainer so they can show you what to do in person or train your dog for you. A biting dog is always a very serious problem, no matter what the circumstance. And you can NEVER train a biting dog not to bite by using treats. Watch the TV show, "The Dog Whisperer." He deals with aggressive dogs on almost every episode and teaches all kinds of ways reinforce your role as the pack leader. Other things you need to do with assertive dogs is to make them sleep in a crate (instead of in your bed where you are considered his litter mate instead of the alpha). The alpha dog always sleeps on a higher spot then the rest of the pack. Don't let him control your walks, walk him and not the other way around. Do not "free feed" him. Feed once or twice a day. Always feed him after you are finished eating(beta dogs eat last and only when pack leader says). And ALWAYS make him sit and wait to eat until you say it is OK(after he gets over the initial shock of not being the alpha anymore). You may need to repeat the training process over and over a few times until you can get him to sit and wait for his food without growling (then take the muzzle off and say "OK" to tell him he can eat. You need to believe from now on that he is only a little dog and you ARE the boss, otherwise, your authority won't be very convincing to him.
I have been training dogs for years and know that this is a very difficult problem, mostly because owners don't believe that they can possibly sum up the courage to assert thier authority in such a way to their precious little dog.
