Why would parents of sexually active teens refuse to put them on birth control?
Teenage pregnancy has really been high the last couple of years in my community. Most of these teenagers have been known to be sexually active for years. There is one boy last year who got three different girls pregnant, and the parents don't seem to care. I just don't understand why they refuse to do it. (I've been on a soap box about this since yesterday when we found out about another one) Any ideas? I'm not jumping on the teens here, (they are having sex for the same reason their parents did) I'm just wondering about the parents?

Putting their guyren on birth control means that they have accepted that their guys are sexually active and it is a way of them protesting. The adults think that if they don't give them birth control, the guys will stop having sex. This obviously back fires on them when they find out that their guy is pregnant or has got another girl pregnant

I know teenagers think they are mature enough and ready for being sexually active, but the fact is that they are not. Becoming sexually active at such a young age has many emotional ramifications that can put you under a great deal of stress, cause depression and anxiety... and this can sometimes lead to suicide attempts.

As a teen I thought I was mature and ready for any number of adult situations, but by the time I hit 20 I could see how much more I had grown - physically and mentally. And between 20 - 25 I could see another big change in myself, and again from 25 - 30. We are constantly evolving (if we're lucky) and adding stresses to our lives before we are emotionally equipped to deal with them can cause big problems.

And for girls (huge double standard here) if word gets out that you're active you get a reputation for being easy and then the only guys that are interested in you are interested only in having sex with you. Not a relationship. No respect. Just sex. How can that possibly make you feel good about yourself?

As hard is it may seem, it really is best to wait until you're older and in a steady relationship with someone you have strong feelings for that has the same feelings for you. Waiting until marriage is obviously the best route, but I'm not naive enough to believe that will happen with the majority of the people in the world. It really is so much better and so much more meaningful with the right person - why waste that first time with the wrong one?

How often do you sexually active teens get tested for HIV?
Unwanted pregnancy is not the worst case scenario when it comes to teen sex. HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. According to the CDC statistics, as many as 24% of sexually active teens are carriers of the HIV virus and don't even know it. Do you get checked often? Do you require proof from your partner that they are negative before engaging in sex? As we all know, condoms break and slip off,,,therefore there really is no such thing as safe sex. Oral sex is no exception.

This is so sad that teens today think sex is a fashion trend. They do not think about this matter whatsoever.

To stop HIV, pregnancy, STDs and such all together among teens our government needs to enforce NO SEX for TEENS. Make a law where they have to be 21 years old to have sex. Any over the age of 17 having sex with a minor should be thrown in jail.

In the US, 1 in 4 sexually active teens become infected with an STD every year. What about adults?

Question to Parents of Teens - How to deal with sexually active teen
My husband and I found many text messages on our 15 yr old son's phone which lead us to believe our son is sexually active. Among other things, the texts reveal that he is trying to coerce his girlfriend in to perfoming oral sex on him. We sat down with him and told him of the implications (health, legal, etc.) of engaging in sexual activity at his age. Hopefully he was listening, but who knows? I'm so confused right now. What should I as a mother do? I just don't think that taking away his phone, computer access and monitoring him to death is the answer but, I confess, this was the first thing that came to mind. Are there any parents out there who have raised teenagers and do you have any advice?

I'm 17 and my parents have just found out i am sexually active with my boyfriend that i have been with for a year. my parents took the wrong route and began shouting and banning me from seeing him.dont do as mine did,itwill push your son further away trust me. Let him know how much you do trust and love your son, he will feel pressured into sex by his peers but you have to realise that he is still your son and by you showing him the correct amount of understanding with disdiscipline should listen.

No. We live in a free country where the government can't control our personal lives. My school educates us about many forms of birth control and they also teach us about abstinence. it is up to everyone's personal responsibility to decide if they want to use protection before they get married or until they can't afford a guy.

Well I always thought that we did. The government pays for them. In fact theres a clinic in my town thats open to all, any age or sex that gives you a sack full of condoms by your request. No questions asked. Maybe you should look into the government's participation.

There are some good points here already, teenagers are lazy. But, I think the biggest reason that teens are not using any sorts of protection is because no one will give them the facts straight up. You've got these hard core Christian groups hollering about no sex before marriage, and abstinence is the only way. And then take into consideration that we are still a bunch of loony Puritans, and sex is a "taboo". They don't have the problems nearly as bad over in Europe, but it's because the Europeans are much more open about sex, and the human body.
Every guy I knew growing up, who actually had parents that would talk to them about sex and protection, was well adjusted and approached sex with their heads on straight.
It's a shame that we have these problems.
